The man behind 'Claude': An Essay by Devin Huynh

Hi guys, my name is Devin Huynh, and thanks for joining me back again on my recent blog rabbithole series articles, which Iโ€™ve been posting pretty recently on our website, where I just talk about ideas that I find genuinely interesting to me.

ย

This week, Iโ€™ve been finding the life biography of Claude Shannon, who is basically the reason why Anthropic called Claude, Claude.

ย

Since I shit post soooo soooo much about Claude on my Insta, I thought it would be interesting to actually talk a bit more about the actual theories and the original scientist,

Claude Shannon.

There are actually a few interesting principles and ideas that he came up with in his life (1916 - 2001) that I found literally scarily similar and relevant to what weโ€™re living in today (especially as AGI approaches)

ย

I mean, obviously, no shit, he created Information Theory (which I will explain simply below), which is one of the foundational theories behind the modern digital world, the modern-day internet, and a lot of what makes AI today possible.

But there are some things that happened in his life, and also just things that are happening right now in todayโ€™s world, whether it comes to AI replacing jobs, the future dystopian fear of AGI and if itโ€™s coming soon or not, and things that he did in his life that are just so uncannily relevant to whatโ€™s happening today. I just thought Iโ€™d write about it here because, yeah, I find it interesting and Iโ€™d love to share my thoughts with you guys.

ย

ย

ย

Iโ€™m no expert by any means, and I donโ€™t know the predictions. I donโ€™t know if AGI is coming in three years, ten years, twenty years, or whenever. When I say AGI, I mean artificial general intelligence: AI that can do a wide range of intellectual work at or above a human level, not just one narrow task.

ย

But I personally (and logically speaking, of course) strongly believe itโ€™s coming at least in the next few years, and I think right now, as humanity, we are very, very close to a change in the way that we work, operate, create, consume, and basically do everything as a whole.

Obviously, Claude Shannon did not play Minecraft, nor was he even alive when Minecraft came out. I just thought itโ€™d be fun and unique to include some modern-day relevant examples here.

I think learning about the life and work of Claude Shannon today is more relevant than ever and probably one of the most insightful things you can do, especially if youโ€™re trying to get into the AI space or just understand what is going on. Reading about his work is very, very helpful and intriguing because youโ€™ll see so many similarities and parallels to whatโ€™s happening today.

Claude Shannon and Information Theory, Simply Explained

ย

Claude Shannon was a mathematician and electrical engineer who founded information theory. In 1948, at Bell Labs, he published A Mathematical Theory of Communication. Very, very simply, it gave us a mathematical way to think about how information can be encoded, transmitted, and recovered even when there is noise.

ย

That idea became foundational to the digital world. Text, audio, images, and signals could all be represented and processed by machines. Shannon did not invent the internet or AI, obviously, but his work sits underneath a huge amount of what came after.

ย

So What Do We Actually Do?

ย

Iโ€™m not trying to predict the exact date AGI arrives. Iโ€™m no expert. What I care about way more is what we do right now while all of this is happening.

ย

In 20 yearsโ€™ time, I think we might look back on this decade as extremely, extremely pivotal. Work, creativity, editing, business, problem-solving, and even how future generations enter the workforce are all going to change.

ย

ย

If youโ€™re an employee, preparing for AI means more than using ChatGPT to write emails faster. Pay attention to where your field is going, learn the tools, and figure out what becomes more valuable as repetitive work gets automated.

ย

If youโ€™re a creative, this is an incredible time to create. You can learn new skills, research faster, code, prototype, and get from โ€œI have an ideaโ€ to โ€œI made somethingโ€ way faster.

ย

If you run a business or agency, look at what is expensive, slow, repetitive, or dependent on one person. The assumptions your business was built on are probably going to change.

ย

A Small Example: AutoEdit

ย

This is part of why I built my AutoEdit plugins: a suite of AI-powered Premiere Pro plugins that automates repetitive editing workflows for music videos, event recaps, creators, and B-roll. Itโ€™s one tiny example of the point: AI is already changing how people work and create before AGI is even here.

ย

You Have to Create Something (again)

ย

If you are able-bodied, in a place where you have access to the internet, and you donโ€™t have to worry about immediate health concerns or survival or food or safety conditions, I think you owe it to build something, to think about something, to create.

ย

You have to create. You have to build something (yes, I know I've talked aout this before but its true!)

ย

You donโ€™t have to build a billion-dollar company or become an AI researcher. Start a business. Make a film. Make art. Build a tool. Learn something outside your field. Solve a problem. Test an idea, and treat it like play. Have fun experiementing.

ย

If anything that's what Claude Shannon taught us for sure.

ย

I feel like our ancestors sacrificed so much for us to be here and for us to be in this moment. There were generations of people before us who were literally slaves, and now I complain about codex limits running out.

ย

If you are fortunate enough to have access to all of this right now, I think you owe it to yourself, and in some way to the people who came before you, to actually do something.

For once, like please just stop scrolling tiktok for a day and try to at least build that cool idea youve been thinking about recently...

ย

But fr... What Do You Think?

ย

What do you think? Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts. If you want, you can just DM us on Instagram. Iโ€™d love to literally just chat in DMs, or you can leave a comment on this article.

ย

I personally think AGI is coming, and that we should all prepare for it in one way or another, even if youโ€™re an employee, business owner, agency, whatever. You should start preparing for AGI because if we thought everything already hasnโ€™t been massively disrupted, it is going to massively, massively disrupt everything.

ย

Right now, you actually have the power to change the course of humanity, deadass.

Hereโ€™s a video where I talk more about Claude, Claude AI, AI video editing, and how Claude is changing video editing workflows.
